Electric motors used in lifting or pulling applications must be extremely robust and reliable for industrial use. Standard off-the-shelf electric motors are unsuitable for industrial lifting and pulling equipment because they cannot handle high stress and intermittent duty. Additionally, they often fail to deliver the necessary torque and reliability required for these applications.

Crane motors are usually large and designed for heavy-duty use. Winch and hoist motors, though smaller in size, still require significant force to lift and transport cargo.
