Bow thrusters, also known as maneuvering thrusters, are increasingly employed in bigger offshore vessels to help them maneuver near coastal areas and channels or when entering or leaving port in stormy waters. These maneuvering thrusters are typically powered by electric motors.

Navigating along coastlines and in narrow channels can be difficult for larger vessels. In response to these issues, shipbuilders add bow thrusters, which are shaft-driven propellers, on the ship’s forward portion or bow. Bow thrusters, smaller than the main propeller, assist the ship to steer more swiftly, especially at low speeds. This allows the ship to maneuver more efficiently and spend less time at port, which can result in cost savings.
