What are High Bay Lights and How Do They Differ from Low Bay Lights?

Bay lights are an essential component for most industrial establishments and manufacturing facilities. They help workers to carry out their jobs correctly and can contribute to boosting their efficiencies. When seeking bay lights, you might come across two options, high bay lights, and low bay lights. If you are confused about which to pick, then read on to know what are high bay lights and how they differ from low bay lights.

What are High Bay Lights and What are Low Bay Lights?

As the name suggests, high bay lights are suitable for spaces with high ceilings, while low bay lights are ideal for low ceiling spaces. Know their other key differences below.

  • Height of Installation

High bay lights are meant for spaces with ceilings higher than 20 feet from the floor and as high as 40 feet. To operate efficiently from such heights, these lights require specially engineered reflectors in the case of MH bulbs or HPS, and they also need lens angles in the case of LED high bays. This helps ensure that the light reaches the floor evenly and is not wasted.

In contrast, low bay lights are ideal for ceilings whose height is below 20 feet from the ground. They are meant for ceilings that are 12 to 20 feet long. So, they are most commonly found in homes, retail businesses, and public buildings, among others.

  • Beam Angle

High bay lighting usually uses common beam angles like 60°, 90°, and 120°. A narrow beam assists in creating a more focused beam that offers a high lux level on the floor. Contrary to that, a wider beam angle lets large areas with lower roof height have a fantastic light distribution. So, low bay lights have a beam angle of 120°. This lens angle also lets the light be directed to specific places.

  • Mounting

High bay lighting is usually hung from pendants, ceilings, or chains using hooks. They can also be fixed directly to the ceiling. Various fixtures like linear high-bays, grid-mount high-bays, architectural high-bays, and round high-bays are commonly used. Mounting low bay lights is easier than high bay lighting as they are much lower than high bay lighting.

  • Application

High bay lights are usually found in commercial spaces such as industrial establishments, manufacturing facilities, factories, storage facilities, airport hangars, school and university gymnasiums, municipal facilities, and warehouses, among others. Low bay lights are usually employed in some establishments mentioned above if the ceiling height is low. Also, low bay lights are more common at gas stations, frozen storage establishments, restaurants, retail stores, etc.
