The Basics of Food Grade Lubricants Everyone Must Know

Food production is a business that should be handled wisely. Many people’s health and well-being can be at risk if one is not careful. One of the most important things to remember while managing a food production business is to make sure that the equipment used for food production is lubricated. It will ensure that the equipment is safe and working optimally.

If you are new to the world of lubricants, read on to know the basics of food-grade lubricants everyone must know.

Lubricants and Their Categories

Lubricants are divided into a few categories based on their likelihood of contacting any foods. The original classification of food-grade lubricants is H1, H2, and H3. The USDA created them. The National Sanitation Federation took responsibility for such tasks on 30 September 1988. Now, they are categorized according to their ingredients.

H1 Lubricants

These lubricants are used in processing environments where incidental food contact might occur. This contact is limited to a trace amount of ten parts per million, or food is deemed unsafe. These lubricants aren’t intended for direct, intentional contact with food. Still, they are generally referred to as Food-Grade Lubricants. This category of lubricants is used as an anti-rust solution.

H2 Lubricants

These lubricants have no possibility of coming in contact with food. They are often used as an anti-rust film or release agent on machine parts or equipment. These can also be used in a food production facility but cannot be used on the production line.

H3 Lubricants

These lubricants are applied to trolleys, hooks, and similar equipment to prevent rust and keep them clean. Often, the lubricants that belong to those categories are also known as soluble or edible oils. The equipment on which these lubricants are applied must be wiped or washed before use. The lubricants in these categories contain oils from cottonseed, corn, and soybean.
